August, 2009:

Cash for Refrigerators

A $300 million cash for appliances program is set to be awarded in November but, unlike cash for clunkers, consumers won’t have to trade in their old appliances. This is good news for consumers who are cash strapped and are due to replace their old appliances. Although the program authorizes only rebates of $50 to $200, these rebates will help families make the transition to more energy efficient appliances.

Appliances that will qualify for the cash for refrigerators (refrigerator rebates) program are those appliances covered by the Energy Star seal.

Cash for Refrigerator taking off

The New York Times reported that recycling program for refrigerators is taking off that works like “cash for clunkers.” The cash-for-refrigerators program spread like wildfire. In fact, New York times reported on August 4 that:

Last week, New Jersey began a statewide program that offers residents a $30 rebate by recycling eligible refrigerators or freezers. Old refrigerators and freezers in Vermont also fetch $30, under a program begun last month.

Pickup is free in both states.

National Grid began a similar program in June, in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The program hopes to save energy and save money for both the utility company and consumer. It also helps save the environment.
